GENDER & THEOLOGY TRAINERS (x2)
Applications are invited from interested individuals for the position of Gender and Theology Trainers for the project on Transforming Harmful Gender Norms to Stop Gender-based Violence (GBV) at the House of Sarah (HoS) located at the MAST, 7 Des Vouex Road, Suva.
The Gender and Theology Trainers (x2) are part of the staff of the House of Sarah under the oversight of the Management Committee through the Executive Director.
1. ROLE OF THE HOUSE OF SARAH
The House of Sarah aims to be a listening ear, warm heart and a welcoming hand to women who are facing violence; and in improving the status of women through the provision of counselling, support services, education, networking, partnerships, and referrals. The House of Sarah works in these programme areas:
i. Awareness – raising and training workshops on VAW, human rights including knowledge of counselling, referral services, laws, policies (government and church).
ii. Selection of focal points known as Sarah carers at parish and central office levels who are trained to provide counselling/Dauveiqaravi and referral support to victims/survivors.
iii. Organising of annual “Break the Silence” Sunday campaign, compilation of liturgical materials on VAW which are used in church services and throughout the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.
iv. Increase the understanding of the clergy and laity leaders regarding the Anglican Safe Church Charter and Canon I, Title D on the Code of Conduct.
v. Design of programmes to implement the 35th Synod policy decision in 2013 on “Zero Tolerance of Violence within our homes, our schools’ settlements and the church”.
2. ABOUT THE PROJECT ON TRANSFORMING HARMFUL GENDER NORMS TO STOP GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE PROJECT
Fiji has some of the highest rates of violence in the world. The National Women’s Health & Safety Studies of 2011 identified that 64% of women in Fiji have experienced sexual or physical violence by an intimate partner. This is double the global average which was 30%. Fiji’s 2007 census recorded that 64 % identified as Christians: 30 % as Hindus and 6 % as Muslims. Faith is a critical area of intervention given the high level of adherents to some religion/faith in Fiji.
The over-arching goal is to contribute towards building a critical mass of faith-based women, men, young people, clergy with a new understanding of God’s vision for human relationships: Making All Things New. “Behold I make all things new. “Revelations 21:5 NKJV. A proper interpretation and understanding of biblical texts is foundational to promoting and advocating loving, peaceful, safe, equal and respectful relationships in family, church and community life.
1. GENDER & THEOLOGY TRAINERS (x2 positions)
In liaison with the Project Co-ordinator and Gender Trainer review the results of the baseline surveys from five communities to ensure that trainings are adapted to the target audience and achieve the objectives of the overall project.
